The first ever William Alwyn Festival will take place at various venues in East Suffolk from Thursday 6 October to Sunday 9 October 2011. The aim of the festival is to focus on the musical legacy of a very successful and prolific British composer, William Alwyn (1905 – 1985), who spent the last twenty five years of his life in Blythburgh. Best known for his film music, Alwyn also composed a wealth of orchestral and chamber music.

This chamber concert features a range of works for recorder played by the master of the instrument, John Turner, including Hymn to the Sun, for solo recorder, which was written for him by Elis Pehkonen (b. 1942), who lives in Theberton. The soprano Lesley-Jane Rogers will perform songs by Doreen Carwithen and Roger Quilter. There will also be music for soprano, recorder and piano by William Alwyn, Anthony Hopkins, Karel Janovicky and others.
