Fresh from the release of their debut CD (Clarinet Fantasies), Wilson and Butler present a lively programme of 20th century British and French works for clarinet and piano. Horovitz’s polished, jazzy Sonatina and Butler’s Barlow Dale feature on the CD, the latter written when the composer was seventeen and based on characters from a children’s book about cats written by his aunt. It was the work which brought the duo together in 2009. Françaix and Messager provide contrasting colours, reflective moods and offbeat rhythmic twists by turns, whilst the ethereal beauty of Debussy’s Premiere Rhapsodie has long been a pinnacle of the clarinet repertoire.
