  1. The Crucifixion - Sir John Stainer
  2. Mass in D Op 86 - Antonín Dvorák

For their spring concert in Rochester’s timelessly magnificent Norman Cathedral, Rochester Choral Society will perform two very different choral gems, both composed in the year 1887. Stainer’s devoutly penitential 'Crucifixion' is a poignant contemplation of Man’s responsibility and reaction to Christ’s suffering and sacrifice. In lively contrast, Dvorák’s exquisite setting of the Mass in D brings the Latin text alive with harmonic light and shade, looking beyond guilt and death to the joy of resurrection and concluding with a quiet plea for peace, which we can all relate to in these troubled times.
