Elizabeth Sombart (“no ordinary pianist” Classical Music Magazine) returns to London for a special performance in the stunning West London setting of Leighton House. Sombart’s busy international career and the work of her Fondation Résonnance, which takes live music where it is most needed throughout seven countries, embodies her mission to communicate joy, beauty and hope through music. This is a rare chance to hear her play a programme of emotive masterpieces for solo piano in London.

The concert opens with Schubert’s lyrical Klavierstück No 2 (D 946), followed by the extraordinary Sonata No 21 in B flat (D 960) – one of the composer’s very last works, written shortly before his death of typhoid fever at just 31. Blissful serenity is punctuated by poignant despair, and turns eventually to defiance: it is the bittersweet farewell of a young, mortally ill composer facing his destiny.

Chopin’s enchanting Barcarolle (Op 60) closes the programme, a sublimely contented miniature that belies the composer’s fragile health at the time of writing and his tormentat the decline of his passionate relationship with George Sand. This beautiful and moving programme is presented in the remarkable ‘private palace of art’ surroundings of Leighton House.

“Classical music speaks about the heart and about what is the best in all of us” Elizabeth Sombart
