You don’t have to be an enthusiastic ornithologist to enjoy Romsey Choral Society’s bird-themed concert. Birds have inspired composers for centuries with their birdsong, appearance, and for their ability to fly. The concert includes wide-ranging musical styles - from the Tudor-Jacobean composer Orlando Gibbons to composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Romsey Choral Society is including a new composition ‘Soul’s Flight’ by their talented musical director Jamie W Hall, which touches on the potency of song to uplift and unite, and a work by the Grammy-winning choral superstar Eric Whitacre. ‘Leonardo dreams of his flying machine’ is inspired by renaissance genius Leonardo da Vinci envisioning the thoughts in his brain as he heard the call of the air, and the challenge to make a machine that would take a human being into mastery of the air.

Other pieces have been inspired by both familiar and legendary birds. Birds familiar to country dwellers like the sparrow, turtle dove, owl, lark, nightingale and swallow are represented in compositions by Mozart, Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Richard Rodney Bennett and Holst. Birds of status like the swan and the bluebird are commemorated by Gibbons and Villiers Stanford in their respective songs ‘The silver swan’ and the evocative ‘The blue bird’.

Join Romsey Choral Society for an evening of uplifting imagery and serene sounds in the sublime acoustic of the Church of St Cross!
