  1. Quatuor pour la fin du temps, 'Quartet for the end of time' - Olivier Messiaen

Music-at-Hill Concert Society offers a rare opportunity to hear Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time) performed by Trio Sonorite Plus One in the beautiful Wren church of St Mary-at-Hill near Monument. The 50 minute work is scored for clarinet, violin, cello and piano. Messiaen wrote the piece in 1940 while a prisoner of war in German captivity, and it was first performed by his fellow prisoners on 15 January 1941.

The Quartet for the End of Time spun out from its prison birth and became one of the most celebrated musical compositions of the 20th century, but it always maintains its ability to astonish and shock.

During the war, Messiaen saw civilisation crumbling around him and thought of it as the end of the world. “And he gave it a religious spin,” the cellist Yehuda Hanani has said. “For him this was the end of time, and you can see him experiencing it, but rather than being destroyed by it, or portraying the cruelty and savagery of war - like Picasso did in Guernica or Shostakovich in his symphonies, which are so devastating - he transcends this whole thing and goes somewhere else.”

Free admission, retiring collection. Coffee and biscuits will be served before and after the concert.
