Big Smoke Brass is a quintet made up of 3rd year classical musicians, studying at Trinity Laban’s Conservatoire of Music and Dance, in Greenwich. The ensemble has an expansive list of repertoire, performing choral works from as early as the Renaissance to brand new compositions from the present day.
Big Smoke Brass’s instrumentation consists of 2 trumpets, 2 flugel horns and a tuba.
The ensembles unorthodox use of a pair of flugelhorns as an alternative to the brass quintet’s horn and trombone, combines uniquely with the rest of the ensemble, painting tonal colours completely different to that of any other conventional brass quintet.
Due to the ensembles unique orchestration, there is no published repertoire written for the group, as a result, everything they will be playing for you today has been either arranged or newly composed for today’s performance.
Big Smoke Brass regularly performs at a variety of engagements throughout the year.
When they are not performing classical chamber music, they place on their other hats, transforming into a New Orleans style hip hop brass, providing the groove to any function.
