In association with Leeds Lieder and as part of Opera North’s commemorations of the centenary of the Armistice, brilliantly expressive British baritone Christopher Maltman and Leeds Lieder’s Joseph Middleton perform a selection of music on the subject of war, charting the soldier’s odyssey from home into battle, and his death and epitaph.

Taking in works by composers from the major nations involved in the First World War including Butterworth, Mahler, Fauré, Ives, Mussorgsky, Wolf and Poulenc, the programme traverses the despair, tender poignancy and rawness of war in songs including Schumann’s devastating Der Soldat, Finzi’s Channel Firing and Ivor Gurney’s deeply expressive Severn Meadows.
