The band was formed in the early 1970s by Dr Roy Newsome, founder of first British course in band musicianship, at what was then Salford College of Technology. He saw the course develop from diploma level to its BA honour status – the first of its kind in Europe. At around the same time Salford University and the College of Technology merged and thus the Band Musicianship course came under the wing of the university.

When Dr Roy Newsome retired from full time education, the position of conductor was handed over to Professor David King, who over the many years masterfully steered the ensemble in many exciting and diverse directions, maintaining its remarkable high standard. The band has been conducted by leading personalities such as Prof. Walter Hargreaves, Major Peter Parkes, Garry Cutt, Goff Richards and Nigel Weeks.Since 2006, Dr Howard Evans has assumed responsibility for the ensemble. He continues to build on the traditions of the past as well as finding new directions for the future. Recently the band has been conducted by Dr Robert Childs, Dr Nicholas Childs and Brett Baker. The band continues to pursue excellence in concerts, recordings and broadcasts.

The band has been a leading force in premiering new works for brass band and encouraging contemporary composers to write new music for its genre. Premiers include works by Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Philip Sparke, Rodney Newton, Martin Ellerby, Darrol Barry and Roy Newsome
