For their fourth visit to Bovey Tracey, the Brodsky Quartet bring us two contrasting masterpeices of twentieth century chamber music - by Elgar and Shostakovich. Both pieces were written in wartime, but their characters could hardly be more different. Wheras Elgar presents us with a seemingly untroubled world - the deep English countryside perhaps - Shostakovich's third is a sweeping epic which traverses many moods: by turns mischievous, gripping, turbulent and passionate before dissolving into mystery at the finish. In addition the programme features two picture postcards by living composers from Mexico.

“What is so striking about the playing of the Brodsky Quartet is their brimming love for the music.” Gramophone Magazine

“…The famous four … constitute simply one of the best string quartet groupings in the world.” Herald Scotland

"[in Shostakovich] the players manage to find a glimmer of hope that creates the strange impression of smiling benevolently through streams of tears. Indeed, it sets the seal on what may well be the Brodsky Quartet’s crowning recorded achievement." The Strad
