Expect a mesmerizing evening of surround-sound supersize polyphony as three leading choirs combine to form a large vocal ensemble in the perfect acoustic of Thaxted’s magnificent medieval church, led by Armonico Consort’s Artistic Director, Christopher Monks. The programme interlaces Striggio’s Mass with items by Hildegard of Bingen, to create a vibrant experience which culminates in Tallis’s crowning motet Spem in alium. The combination of these leading vocal talents offers a rare opportunity to appreciate the flowering of sixteenth-century church music, and its roots in an even earlier plainsong tradition, in this most fitting of settings.
