The main course on the menu of our season’s opening concert is one of the most popular pieces in the chamber music repertoire, Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet. This is a work whose vital and effervescent spirit must have prompted Einstein’s description: “ a piece we cannot help but love”. We feature the double bass as a both protagonist, in Glière’s astonishing virtuoso pieces, and as a duo partner and mock-serious accompanist in 'Trout Served Four Ways' written for the outrageous combination of cor anglais and double bass. Two quartets with oboe make rare appearances: Martinu’s style contains both classical qualities and a touching and typically energetic salute to his Czech folk roots. As hors d’oeuvre, Malcolm Arnold’s Oboe Quartet of 1957, is truly English - both extrovert and debonair in character.
