Music in the Round and Sheffield Theatres present staged versions of Alexander Pushkin’s short play Mozart and Salieri – the inspiration behind Peter Shaffer’s hit play and film Amadeus – and The Masque of the Red Death by the master of the short horror story, Edgar Allan Poe. Actors are to be announced later in the year, they will be directed by Taio Lawson, Resident Assistant Director of Sheffield Theatres.

A jealous man burns with such uncontrollable envy that he is driven to murder the greatest composer that has ever lived. And a stranger wearing a mask that resembles the countenance of a stiffened corpse makes an unwelcome and deadly appearance in a remote, besieged castle.

Electrifying music is interwoven throughout the evening: Mozart’s brilliant chamber pieces stir Salieri’s hatred, and works by Florent Schmitt and Claude Debussy consciously mirror Poe’s gripping literary style. The musical climax is André Caplet’s Conte fantastique, an arresting portrayal of The Masque of the Red Death!
