Winterreise D 911
- Franz Schubert
Programme to include Schubert’s Winterreise. We are delighted to welcome Robert Holl, truly one of the great Lieder singers of our time, to perform Schubert’s cycle of 24 songs setting poems by Wilhelm Müller. The Dutch bass baritone followed in the footsteps of his teacher Hans Hotter to become one of the world’s foremost opera and oratorio performers. He has also delighted audiences with the penetrating intelligence and eloquent artistry of his Lieder interpretations, qualities sure to be on display during this performance of Winterreise, in which he is joined by Graham Johnson, that peerless Schubertian.
6.45pm free pre-concert talk with Richard Stokes in Rooftop Bar. Please book in advance. Ahead of the evening recital, Richard Stokes will talk about the originality of Winterreise, discuss why his friends failed to appreciate the songs, explore the biographical background to the cycle, and illustrate how Schubert frequently tweaked the original poems to suit his own compositional purposes.
