Songs of longing, love and lust
Louise Alder’s most recent season saw her reach the finals of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017, win the Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize, and the Young Singer Award at the International Opera Awards 2017. She gave a triumphant recital for Leeds Lieder’s Strauss Survey. Her début recital CD with Joseph Middleton has been met with universal acclaim including Sunday Times Disc of the Week and Editor’s Choice in both Classical Music Magazine and Gramophone Magazine.
‘…radiant, silver-flecked-with-gold tone, long-breathed phrases and exquisitely floated high notes’ Hugh Canning, The Sunday Times on Louise Alder
‘…one of the most talented, intuitive collaborative pianists of his generation’. Classical Music Magazine on Joseph Middleton.
6.45pm free pre-concert talk with Roger Nichols in Rooftop Bar. Please book in advance. In the second of his talks exploring the mélodies of Debussy, Roger Nichols will turn to the Ariettes oubliées. With poetry by Verlaine, these six songs find Debussy indulging in ecstasy, in the monotony of rain, in a wonderfully fresh and seductive love song, Green, in which the agile vocal line at last settles on a series of low repeated notes as the lover too settles on his beloved’s breast. Finally pre-echoing the Wagnerian Baudelaire songs, a song of heartbreak, where all depends on the final ‘hélas!’, placed with apparent insouciance in the middle of a phrase, leaving the piano to pick up the pieces.
