  1. Myrthen, 26 songs for voice and piano Op 25 - Robert Schumann

Multi Gramophone Award Winner Carolyn Sampson returns to Leeds Lieder to open the 2018 Festival, following her thoughtful and colourful recital in 2015. Her critically acclaimed partnership with Joseph Middleton has been described as ‘inspired’ (Guardian) and their music making ‘an indivisible unit with sound and sense beautifully fused’ (Gramophone Magazine). Tonight they are joined by one of the finest young Lieder interpreters, Julian Prégardien, well known to audiences at Wigmore Hall, Munich’s Bavarian Opera, Salzburg Mozart Festival and the Schubertiade in Hohenems/Schwarzenberg. They will perform Robert Schumann’s wedding gift to Clara, his Myrthen, as well as a selection of his other songs and duets.

6.45pm free pre-concert talk with Richard Stokes in Rooftop Bar. Please book in advance.Join one of the world’s pre-eminent Lieder experts, and Leeds Lieder Patron, Richard Stokes, as he discusses the fascinating history of Schumann’s evergreen Myrthen, ahead of the Opening Concert.
