  1. Symphony No 4 - Gustav Mahler, arranged for chamber ensemble by Klaus Simon
  2. Les Illuminations Op 18 - Benjamin Britten

Helix Ensemble is returning to the comfortable venue of St Andrew’s Church in Countesthorpe on Saturday 10th February at 7.30pm. This year our Musical Director is Mark Heron who conducts orchestras in the north of England and is a tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music. He has chosen two pieces that are typical of their composers and together make an amazing programme.

We bring you a chamber version of Mahler’s 4th Symphony, with strings, single wind and horns as well as percussion, harmonium and piano. Completed in 1900 it is the lightest and simplest of Mahler symphonies with an atmosphere of good humour right from the beginning with the sound of sleigh bells. Beautiful tunes and themes appear throughout, with a slow movement as enticing as the well-known Adagietto of the 5th Symphony. The work has as a central idea the expression of child’s view of heaven which is expanded in the last movement with verses from old German poems. Our soloist will be Caroline Taylor, a young award-winning soprano currently studying at RNCM.

Benjamin Britten wrote Les Illuminations in 1939 using seven poems by Arthur Rimbaud. The strange almost untranslatable prose-poems use vivid imagery portraying aspects of life, conjuring up a surreal atmosphere like a dream. Britten’s evocative and beautiful music reinforces the imagery.

Come along and be entranced! Refreshments will be available.
