  1. Liturgy of St John Chrysostom Op 31 - Sergey Rachmaninov

"What is Music? How do you define it? Music is a calm moonlit night, the rustle of leaves in summer.” Sergei Rachmaninov

Our first concert of the 2018 season is an immersive experience evoking the ancient musical traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church. The choir processes by candlelight, beneath the dark vaults of Exeter’s imposing mediaeval cathedral, chanting in Old Church Slavonic.

The rich sounds and deep harmonies of the Liturgy could only have been composed by Rachmaninov. Less flamboyant than his Vespers, the Liturgy, nevertheless, has great warmth and a moving humanity.
