  4. Job - A Masque for Dancing - Ralph Vaughan Williams

Northampton Symphony Orchestra's season 'Symphonic Gallery' opens with a programme of 20th century masterpieces that brim over with colour and vitality. Walton's Overture Portsmouth Point vividly captures the bustle of Richardson's painting of this naval cities busy streetscene. Martinu's Frescoes are his last great orchestral work inspired by the paintings of Piero della Francesca. Ravel's astonishing Concerto for the Left Hand pitches a vast orchestra against a pinaist restricted to only their left hand - however Ravel's mastery of orchestral colour means the piano holds its own brilliantly against this powerful orchestra. Finally Vaughan Williams's masterly Masque for Dancing - Job. An extraordinary score that includes the use of a saxohpone to depict the false comforters of Job.
