'Sunshine and Shade' ranges from brilliant Italian sunshine to the shade of an English glade, and from the call of the cuckoo to the frenzy of the tarantella.

"This is Italy! And now has begun... the supreme joy in life". "It is the jolliest piece I have ever done, especially the last movement", wrote Mendelssohn of his Italian Symphony. After a sparkling first movement, the second portrays a religious procession in Naples, and the fourth features the wild dance known as the tarantella, said to portray the throes of a person stung by the tarantula spider.

Savitri Grier, age 24, read Music at Christ Church, Oxford. She has given recitals and taken part in festibvals across Europe, and recent engagements included her debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Leslie Olive, conductor of Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra, writes "Savitri played the Mendelssohn concerto for me at a concert in Surrey and I came away thinking we simply must bring her to Suffolk." In the 2017 Bury St Edmunds Festival Savitri played The lark ascending to huge acclaim.
