Alex has successfully auditioned for the National Youth Jazz Collective Summer School for the last five years and in summer 2015 (aged 16) was one of two UK 16-19 year-olds chosen to attend the prestigious Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony in Stockton, California. After attending The Purcell School on a scholarship for her sixth form studies she has secured a scholarship place at The Royal Academy of Music for September 2017.

Since winning the BBC Young Musician 2016 Jazz Award Alexandra has been interviewed on ‘In tune’ on Radio 3, interviewed on ‘Jazz Now’ on Radio 3 and hosted the ‘True Brit’ show on Jazz FM. She also performed with fellow BBC Young Musician Jazz Award finalists Noah Stoneman (2016 final) and Freddie Jensen (2014 final) as a trio in the interval during the Classical BBC Young Musician final at The Barbican. This was filmed by the BBC to use at a later date.

In November 2016 the BBC invited Alexandra to be the featured soloist on flugelhorn with the Euroradio Jazz Orchestra’s performances of Kenny Wheeler’s 59 minute long ‘Sweet Sister Suite’. Their first performance on Thursday 17th November at The Royal Conservatiore of Scotland was recorded by the BBC and broadcast across the EU including Radio 3’s Jazz Now show on Feb 20th 2017. She received ‘Highly commended’ in the 2015 Junior Ram Intermediate Brass prize, won the Toddington Young Musician of the Year 2014 and was The British Jazz Awards 2016 ‘Rising Star’ runner up.

In addition to leading her own band ‘The Alexandra Ridout Quintet’, Alexandra is a member of ‘The Ridouts’ , a band that includes her brother Tom (saxophone and recorder) and dad Mark (guitar) with Tristan Mailliot (drums) and Flo Moore (bass). She is also a member of Clark Tracey’s ‘Tribute to Stan Tracey’s Hexad’ band , The Barford/Stoneman Organ Quintet and is a chair (full time member) in NYJO (The National Youth Jazz Orchestra).

Alexandra Ridout Quintet

The members of the quintet all met at The Royal Academy of Music Junior Jazz department, which they attend every Saturday in term time. Their passion for the music and outstanding musicianship produce an incredibly mature band sound that belies their tender years. They are equally at home playing hard swinging jazz, contemporary jazz, poignant ballads and solid funk tunes.

The band is Alexandra Ridout – 18 (trumpet), Noah Stoneman – 16 (piano), Miles Mindlin – 16 (guitar), Freddie Jensen -18 (bass) and Luca Caruso -18 (drums).
