  1. Overture, from Benvenuto Cellini - Hector Berlioz
  2. Concierto de Aranjuez - Joaquin Rodrigo
  3. Festive Overture in A Op 96 - Dmitry Shostakovich
  4. Symphony No 5 in E flat Op 82 - Jean Sibelius

The final concert in our 1917 centenary series includes both a Russian and a Finnish piece. But we open with Berlioz's brilliant overture to his opera Benvenuto Cellini. Although the opera itself is technically challenging and rarely performed, the overture gives a summary of the thematic material.

Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez is one of the few works to showcase the classical guitar with a full symphony orchestra, and we are delighted to have Giacomo Susani to perform this beautiful work with us,

Shostakovich's Festive Overture, in contrast to his symphonic works, is a feel-good show tune in the same vein as his Jazz Suites.

We round out the programme with one of Sibelius's most popular symphonies, commissioned to celebrate his 50th birthday just before the Finnish civil war which resulted in independence from Russia in 1917.
