Bristol Choral Society and New Bristol Sinfonia celebrate the wealth of music to be found in the neglected Victorian treasure-chest. Featuring gems from Stanford, Parry, Elgar and Sullivan, including choral-orchestral pieces such as Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens (‘my favourite piece written by an Englishman’ Vaughan Williams) and Stanford’s heroic ballad The Revenge - A Ballad of the Fleet as well as unaccompanied part-songs and popular orchestral classics.

Showcasing musical gems from the period in which the choir was formed, the concert will include favourites such as Jerusalem and Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance March No.4 alongside some neglected gems long overdue for revival.
Stanford's The Revenge (A ballad of the fleet) will be the main work of the evening - a wonderfully dramatic setting of Tennyson which has only been recorded once (on an award-winning Chandos CD conducted by the choir's late President Richard Hickox). Members of Bristol Choral Society sang on that recording, so this is a chance to hear a performance with some of the 'original recording artists!'.
The choir will also be joined by New Bristol Sinfonia who will play Elgar's Froissart and Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream overtures, as well as accompanying the choir in the Stanford and Parry's Blest Pair of Sirens.
