  1. Symphony No 1, 'A Sea Symphony' - Ralph Vaughan Williams
  2. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in G - Maurice Ravel

Vaughan Williams’s wonderful evocation of the sea in all its guises forms the main work in this year’s Easter concert from The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School. Setting Walt Whitman’s beautiful poetry did not come easy to Vaughan Williams and he spent almost ten years composing A Sea Symphony.

The end result is extraordinary however and the work stands firmly in the canon of great choral orchestral masterpieces.

Before the Sea Symphony we hear one of the greatest works of Vaughan Williams’s teacher, Ravel, as Upper Sixth Vaughan pupil Owen Saldanha peforms the Frenchman’s brilliantly jazzy Piano Concerto in G.
