  1. The Kingdom Op 51 - Sir Edward Elgar

Elgar’s last and arguably greatest choral work tells of the transformation of the apostles from frightened disciples into bold evangelists after Jesus’s death. It is well known for Mary’s solo The Sun goeth down, sung after the arrest of the Apostles and which is, perhaps, one of the most haunting things that Elgar ever wrote.

Our previous performance of The Kingdom in St Albans Cathedral earned high praise from Martin Bird, Review Editor of the Elgar Society Journal, who wrote: “The Hertfordshire Chorus was a revelation. I’ve been singing in and conducting choirs, large and small, professional and amateur, for half a century, and the blend of sound, the tone, and consistent accuracy were something that I would normally expect to hear only in the best chamber choirs, amateur or professional.”
