  3. Mass No 6 in E flat D 950 - Franz Schubert

Lewisham Choral Society presents an evening of glorious choral and orchestral music, combining Schubert’s majestic Mass in E flat with Mozart’s sublime Piano Concerto in C, K 467. The concert opens with Schubert’s joyous Offertorium, Intende Voci, for tenor, chorus and orchestra.

Schubert’s Mass in E flat was his sixth setting of the mass, written shortly before his untimely death and never performed in his lifetime. It is a powerful work of many contrasts, in turns peaceful, mysterious, dramatic and exhilarating and of course, as we would expect from Schubert, always richly lyrical. His Offertorium is a delightful little gem, with a tenor soloist soaring above the choir, while the orchestra provides a sparkling accompaniment.

Mozart’s glorious Piano Concerto in C is nowadays often dubbed the ‘Elvira Madigan’ following its use in the soundtrack of the film of that name. This beautiful concerto rightly remains one of Mozart’s most-loved works.

For this concert, Lewisham Choral Society welcomes a bevy of first-class soloists: Helen Meyerhoff (soprano), Susan Legg (alto), Mark Chaundy (tenor) and Philip Tebb (bass). The piano soloist is Nico de Villiers. Lewisham Choral Society is one of London’s most popular and accomplished choirs, performing in major venues in London and abroad. Recent reviews describe our performances as ‘magnificent’, ‘exhilarating’ and ‘nerve-tingling’.

Forest Philharmonic, a leading community orchestra, has performed with Lewisham Choral Society in two sell-out concerts at the Royal Festival Hall. Our conductor is former Choirboy of the Year Dan Ludford-Thomas, now music director of Lewisham Choral Society and several other choirs, including the fantastically successful Lewisham and Greenwich NHS choir.
