Note: A wonderful programme of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Elgar performed by Andrew O'Brien (tenor), Sholto Kynoch (piano) and the Doric Quartet.

Ralph Vaughan Williams' lessons with Ravel gave him a feeling for the harmonic and timbral colours of impressionism, such a the expressive possibilities of parallel chords. Ravel's influences turns up in the six songs of On Wenlock Edge, after poems by A E Housman. Written in 1909 for string quartet, piano and tenor, it is one of the supreme masterpieces of the English song-cycle repertoire. Coupled Elgar's sublime A minor Quintet this is a concert not to be missed.
