The premiere of the Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis in Gloucester Cathedral was one of the great moments in the cultural history of these islands. Few cannot be amazed by the texture and sonority that Vaughan Williams conjures up in this beautiful work. Finzi's Eclogue was originally planned as a slow movement for a discarded piano concerto but it remains a touching minature. In contrast, two Russian masterpieces that bring power, drama and passion to the fore. Tchaikovsky's Serenade is one of the most popular works of the genre and is well-known as the music for one of Balanchine's earliest ballets recently in rep. at the Royal Ballet. Worthing Symphony Orchestra - the professional orchestra of West Sussex - is rapidly establishing itself as a major source of quality music making under its inspirational principal conductor John Gibbons. They are joined for this concert by acclaimed young Russian pianist, Rustem Hayroudinoff, recently nominated by BBC Music Magazine for his recording of Rakhmaninov's Etudes-Tableaux whilst his recording of Dvorak's Piano Concerto was selected amongst the Best CDs of the year by Gramophone magazine. |
