***** Big crowd, phenomenal atmosphere and a concert in a thousand. - Michael Tumelty, The Herald.

The Orchestra recently celebrated its 125th anniversary and was originally founded to perform in the Royal presence, although in the early 20th-century it was permitted to perform at commercial concerts for the general public. It was Evgeny Mravinsky who joined the orchestra in 1938 who is largely credited with transforming it into one of the best orchestras in the world over the next 50 years. The orchestra rapidly became the model for the performance of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich symphonies.

Current Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Yuri Temirkanov is also highly regarded: ...under Mr Termirkanov, its director since 1988, the St Petersburg Philharmonic sounds like no other orchestra. - The New York Times.

Acclaimed pianist Elisso Virsaladze performs regularly both individually and in chamber music and with orchestras such as the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra or Royal Philharmonia London she has toured North America, Japan and Europe extensively.

Having received her first piano lessons in her native Georgia from her grandmother, Professor Anastasia Virsaladze, she is recognised today herself as an exceptional teacher. Moscow Conservatory and Munich Musikhochschule have made Virsaladze a regular professor and there is hardly any important international competition where she has not been invited to take part in the jury.
