From 1819 to 1823, Beethoven was stirred by a renewed creative energy. Sketched over this four-year period, on specially enlarged manuscript sheets, was the work Beethoven himself came to admire above all others: his Missa Solemnis. Using every means of musical imagery available to him, Beethoven set about demonstrating his supreme mastery of the orchestral-choral model, with no lesser aim than to instil a fervent religious faith in both his musicians and his audiences. The utmost composer of conviction seems in this work to surpass even himself in his musical glimpse of the heavenly.
Robert Holl and András Schiff, Queen Elizabeth Hall, 16 December 2007 Holl’s huge presence, and huge, dark voice can transform itself at will into the lightest breath of spring, rising into a hushed head-voice with total ease, or fining itself down to recreate the vision of a wakeful gondolier and a sleeping Serenissima.Holl held his audience rapt for Das Abendrot, another sunset, and a tour de force for a true basso profundo. Holl became an ancient prophet, patiently yet urgently unfolding the mysteries within Hymne 1 and Nachthymne. Holl and Schiff lived the music as one in the valedictory Im Abendrot, before roaring applause elicited three generous encores, ending with Holl’s beloved and nicely seasonal Der Winterabend.
