Note: Gazing from the window of his beloved home in the Finnish countryside, Jean Sibelius glimpsed a group of swans taking flight. The First World War was tearing Europe to pieces, and Sibelius was visited still by illness and depression. Into the bleak landscape of his forlorn existence the swans thrust a sudden light and optimism: Sibelius wrote glowingly of the swans before capturing them musically in the last movement of his Fifth Symphony with a beautiful, hopeful motif that soars inspiringly upwards from within the orchestra, free from its creator’s earthly concerns.
