Note: La Valse opens the curtains on Maurice Ravel’s extraordinary imagination: Clouds whirl about...as they gradually lift, one can discern a gigantic hall, filled by a crowd of dancers...the glow of the chandeliers breaks out fortissimo. In his life and works, the composer swung from intellectual elegance to childlike playfulness – and back; a charming hallmark reflected in the spirited pendulum-sway of La Valse, and the adjacent architectural marvels and frolicsome creatures of Pictures at an Exhibition, which Ravel thrust into orchestral technicolour from Mussorgsky’s piano suite.

There will be a free pre-concert event from 6.15pm until 6.45pm in which Sean Rafferty discusses the evening's programme with trombonist Christian Lindberg.
