Note: Because 2008 is the 160th anniversary of Chopin’s visit to Britain in 1848, The Chopin Society (UK) is holding a Summer International Piano Festival to mark the occasion. This a new venture for the Society, and with an outstanding line-up of artists, our superb 1975 Steinway Model B Grand - once the favourite instrument of the Polish pianist Malcuzynski - plus some very interesting programmes, we feel sure you will want to come to more than one of these concerts.

Chopin’s public and semi-public concerts in 1848 took place in London at 99 Eaton Place on June 23rd, and 2 St James’s Square on July 7th, as well as in Manchester on August 28th, Glasgow on September 27th and Edinburgh on October 4th. Obviously it would be impossible for us to hold concerts on the actual dates, particularly as our recitals are always on Sunday afternoons, but our dates: June 15th, July 13th, August 31st and September 21st and 28th are pretty close.

Our venue, St Gabriel’s Church in the heart of Pimlico was completed in 1842, so Chopin could have seen it when he came to London. The Grade 2* listed church in one of London’s elegant garden squares, built in 1853 by architect Thomas Cundy, Surveyor of all the Grosvenor Estates covering today’s Belgravia and Pimlico. Transport links are excellent, parking is not a problem on a Sunday and there is no Congestion Charge. The audience capacity at St Gabriel’s is approximately 200. Sight lines are good, as the piano is raised on a platform.

Following the concert we are offering a Reception with wine/tea/coffee/juice and a finger buffet, which Hamish Milne will attend.
Ticket Prices: £12 (£10 OAPs including reception with wine and finger buffet, £6/£3 for friends/youth members including reception, £10/£8 for friends of the Chopin Society, free for members, £6 full-time students, £4 for reception) - Tickets available from 020 8960 4027 or on the door
