Two of the greatest string works in the repertoire celebrating the joy of the natural world and the despair of man-made destruction; this promises to be a sensational beginning for the festival. Soloist Jan Schmolck takes us on a journey through babbling brooks, swarms of insects, storms and frozen lakes. By contrast Richard Strauss’s work for twenty-three solo strings mourns the destruction of the Dresden opera house during the Second World War. It is the perfect counterpoint to Vivaldi’s witty and beautiful baroque masterpiece. |
