The sublimely bitter-sweet Elgar cello concerto is the showcase for the talents of Jessica Hayes, winner of the Chandos Symphony Orchestra Young Musician Competition. In this, the third event in the orchestra’s thirtieth year, conductor Michael Lloyd explores the exciting sound-world of Capriccio Espagnole and the Fifth Symphony of Shostakovitch, whose conception Shostokovitch described as the making of a man.
