| Note: | |
This programme brings together some of the most beautiful music for choir, harp and string orchestra.
Britten’s exuberant Te Deum opens the concert. This work is most often heard in a liturgical setting with organ accompaniment, but here the Vivace Chorus gives it a rare but welcome outing in the version for choir, harp and strings.
For the same forces the choir sings the evergreen Cantique de Jean Racine, one of Fauré’s most entrancingly beautiful works, and very much in the same compositional vein as his Requiem. One of Elgar’s most popular pieces is Nimrod from the Enigma Variations. Here we hear it in an astonishing arrangement for choir alone, using an extract from the Latin Requiem, Lux aeterna. None of the nobility and grandeur is lost in this glorious setting.
The orchestra will play two of the most popular pieces for strings ever written: Samuel Barber’s Adagio for strings, with all its searing, intense beauty, and the sublime Adagietto from the Symphony No 5 by Gustav Mahler. One of the highlights of the Vivace calendar in recent years was our performance of Karl Jenkins’s Mass for Peace: The Armed Man, a hugely popular and successful concert. Now we are staging his equally loved Requiem as part of our on-going series of Contemporary Choral Classics. |
