Charity concert in aid of the Union Chapel Willis Organ. Ian Coleman was born and brought up in Cambridge, where he was first a chorister in Jesus College Choir, organist at St Benet's Church, and organ scholar at St Catharine's College. He studied organ under Peter le Huray and conducting with Adrian Leaper, gaining a first class degree in Music and English from Cambridge University. After following the post-graduate course at the Royal Academy of Music, he spent four years in the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), during which time he also studied French and Philosophy. Having left the order he returned to a full-time music career, studying piano with Piers Lane and choral conducting with Patrick Russill. He now combine performing on organ and piano with choral direction and further research, especially in Gregorian chant, its performance, theology and spirituality. He also recently gave the first performance of my 'Canzona' in the Annual Festival of New Organ Music in Islington.
The Schola Caeciliana is the junior choir of the the church of St Anselm and St Cecilia, Holborn, and has been in existence for some 20 years now. It has had several distinguished directors, including Anthony Halliday and Gerdie Troskie, and has taken part in occasional concerts and tours, in addition to its main work, which is singing for the 10am Mass at St Anselm's. The choir, composed of both boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 14, sings mainly music from the Latin repertoire, and, in particular, Gregorian chant. |
