Film Fantasia programme presents major works by Mozart, Debussy and Gershwin alongside a wide range of silent films. When listening to music many people respond to what they hear by relating it to other sensations - they imagine colours and shapes or create storylines. Throughout the twentieth century leading filmmakers created work inspired this way - their own responses to music. In this programme John Lenehan has collected together a wide variety of piano music all with film accompaniments. They range from cartoons (including one of the very first) to abstract representations (similar to Walt Disney’s Fantasia) to straightforward story telling as in the charming films based on Carmen and The Magic Flute. John’s involvement with film is not just confined to the silent era – his piano playing can be heard playing on many more recent cinematic achievements including The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Shrek 2.
John Lenehan is one of Britain’s most experienced, versatile and sought after musicians. Praised by the New York Times for his great flair and virtuosity and the London Times (a masterly recital), his performances and recordings have been acclaimed throughout the world. John Lenehan’s interest in the combination of music and film has been long-standing. As director of Sounds for Silents he has written and arranged more than 20 film scores, which have been performed throughout the UK in Festivals such as Aldeburgh, Cheltenham, Brighton and Harrogate. There have also been performances in Italy, Germany, Norway and Australia.
Great entertainment and something for everyone to enjoy!
