Wagner’s ever-popular Siegfried Idyll opens our Memories of Spring concert. It was written as a love poem and as a thanksgiving to his wife, Cosima, for the birth of their son, Siegfried. It was first performed on the stairs of the Wagner household on Christmas morning, Cosima’s 33rd birthday. The renowned trumpeter, Mark Bennett, joins us for Panufnik’s Concerto in modo antico. A little-known work, it was adapted from a film score written a few years earlier. Based mainly on old Polish tunes, it is charming in its simplicity. Schumann’s uplifting Spring symphony closes this concert. It was written in the depths of winter and was inspired by poetry. The whole work exhales the fresh, crisp, exhilarating and yet balmy, breath of springtime. It is full of love and merriment, and perfectly titled. |
