The Wihan Quartet is one of the major string quartets to have emerged from the great school of Czech playing in recent years. Formed in 1985, and still made up of the original four members, the Quartet has developed an outstanding reputation for the interpretation of its native Czech repertoire as well as the many classical, romantic and modern masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire.
They have developed an impressive international career, which includes visits to major festivals in Europe and the Far East. They visit the United States regularly and have had highly acclaimed tours of Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong and make frequent visits to the UK, playing at Wigmore Hall, the South Bank and many other venues.
Martin Kasik is an outstanding young Czech pianist. He has won many prizes including the prestigious New York Young Concert Artists Competition in 1999 where he was also awarded the Pasadena Symphony Soloist Prize and the Beracasa Foundation Prize of the Montpellier Radio-France Festival. Other honours include First Prize in the Prague Spring Competition in 1998, the 1999 Akzo Nobel Prize, and the prestigious Davidoff Prize, awarded to him in 2000. He has appeared as a soloist with a number of orchestras (New York Chamber Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, Deutsche Radio Berlin, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Slovak Philharmonic). In 2002 he appeared at the prestigious Metropolitan Museum concert series in New York and he made his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pinchas Zukerman. |
